Need a summer job? A winter job at a local pool? This course is designed to teach lifeguards, as professional rescuers, the skills needed to prevent injuries, prepare for and respond appropriately to drowning, injury, breathing and cardiac emergencies. This approximately 31 hour training will train participants to the newly released lifeguard program, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid. The Lifeguard and First Aid certifications are valid 3 years and the CPR/AED certification is valid for one year.
Prerequisites:
- Minimum of 15 years old
- 300 yard swim with 100 yards of front crawl 100 yards of breast stroke and 100 yards of either front crawl or breast stroke
- 20-yard back and forth swim with surface dive to retrieve a 10-pound object from a depth of 7-10 feet, under 1 minute and 40 seconds

The purpose of this review setting is to give participants the opportunity to review the Lifeguard Training course content within a formal class setting. To be eligible to participate in the Lifeguard review course, a participant must have successfully completed an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course within the last 4 years and a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer course within the past 2 years. Proof of this prior training is required at the start of the class.

Whether guarding non-surf, open water or at a pool, this course is designed to teach lifeguards, as professional rescuers, the skills needed to: prevent injuries and prepare for and respond appropriately to drowning, injury, breathing and cardiac emergencies.

550-yard swim with 200 yards of front crawl, 200 yards of breast stroke and 150 yards of either front crawl or breast stroke.

Swim 5 yards; submerge and retrieve 3 dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4-7 feet of water, resurface; and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool.

Fundamentals of Instructor Training
Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT): All WSI candidates must obtain a FIT certification prior to attending the WSI certification. The Fitness center will be offering 2 courses prior to the WSI class. Candidates can also contact their local Red Cross of additional courses.

This course is not designed to teach basic-level swimming skills. It is dedicated to developing the skills and knowledge that is needed to plan and teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program.
Registration & Prior to the course information:
All registrations must go through the Aquatic Director, Jennifer Pageot. Space is limited. Registering candidates are strongly encouraged to have their skills pre-screened by Jennifer. The pre-screening with Jennifer allows candidates to know if their skills will be adequate for the pre-course. A minimum number of candidates must be registered by May 14th or the course will be cancelled.

To participant in the Water Safety Instructor course, candidates must be at least 16 years old and be able to demonstrate the following skills at the pre-course:
1. Swim the following strokes consistent with the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Level 4 Stroke Performance Criteria:
¨ Front Crawl-25 yards
¨ Back Crawl- 25 yards
¨ Breaststroke- 25 yards
¨ Elementary backstroke- 25 yards
¨ Sidestroke- 25 yards
¨ Butterfly- 15 yards
2. Maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).
3. Tread water for 1 minute.
Please bring these documents to the pre-course session:
¨ Proof that you are at least 16 years old by the end of the course (driver’s license or birth certificate).
¨ Fundamental of Instructor Training certification (C3010) issued in the last 12 months or a current health and Safety Services Instructor Authorization (F5736 or C3005).
To be an effective Water Safety instructor, candidates must be completely familiar with the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety manual, the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Manual CD-ROM and other course materials and videos. Candidates will be given practice-teaching assignments, which will give them experience in presenting information and teaching skills to other course candidates, conducting classes and evaluating skills.
Course Completion:
Course completion certificates will be awarded to instructor candidates who successfully complete the pre-course session, attended every class session, successful perform all practice-teaching assignments and past the final written exam with a score of 80 percent or higher (correctly answer al least 40 of 50 questions). Candidates must also demonstrate maturity and responsibility throughout the course. These qualities are demonstrated by, among other things:
¨ Arriving at class on time and prepared
¨ Returning from breaks on time
¨ Being prepared for class activities, such as with homework completed and dressed in swim suit, when required
¨ Completing homework assignments, including preparing written lessons plans
¨ Demonstrating that effort was put forth towards homework assignments
¨ Behaving appropriately to activities
¨ Providing appropriate feedback, as required, especially to peers after practice-teaching sessions
¨ Receiving feedback from the instructor trainer as well as peers in a professional manner
¨ Treating others with respect
Medical Conditions or Disabilities:
Course work will include physical exercise. If you have a medical condition or disability or if you have any questions about your ability to participant fully in this course, discuss them with your physician or health-care provider and with Jennifer Pageot before the start of the course.

WSI: $ 220 FRC members/UMF faculty, staff and students ($200 refund is candidate does not pass pre-course exam); $250 on-members ($230 refund if candidate does not pass pre-course)
This course is designed to provide individuals with the information and skills necessary to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will also be taught how to protect themselves while helping others. The 4.5 hour course is composed of classroom and in water sessions. Eligible participants will receive an American Red Cross Basic Water Rescue certification valid for 3 years. This course meets the State of Maine daycare/childcare provided aquatic licensing requirement.

CPR/AED and First Aid for the Lay Responder (Community)
This course trains participants to respond to emergencies in their communities, workplaces and homes. Participants will learn to respond and care for unconscious victims, breathing emergencies, sudden illness, bleeding, and more. Through guided instruction and hands on practice with a certified instructor, participants will gain confidence in caring for adults, children and infants. After completing all requirements of the course, participants will receive an American Red Cross adult, child and infant CPR certification valid for 1 year and first aid certification valid for 3 years. Participants are not required to take all portions, call for details.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
This course is designed for the Professional Rescuer, those who have a duty to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies. Occupations may include lifeguards, nurses, athletic trainers, EMT’s, and CAN’s. Participants will learn to care for adults, children and infants who are unconscious and not responsive. After completing all requirements of the course, participants will receive an American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification valid for 1 year.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Review
This course is for those currently certified in American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or within 12 months of expiring. Through video, lecture, and skill reinforcement, participants will review the material and skills necessary to earn an American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification. This is an ideal course for lifeguards, nurses, EMT's and other professional rescuers.

Babysitter’s Training with First Aid
This course will
provide youth with the information and skills necessary to provide safe and
responsible care for children in the absence of parents or guardians. Topics
that are covered include: leadership skills, care giving, first aid skills, safe play,
and
safety. Students will be given a comprehensive babysitter’s
training manual and the tools needed to create a babysitter’s kit. With
successful completion of the course participants will earn an American Red Cross
Babysitter’s Training and a First Aid certification.
Students are asked to bring, what they consider to be, a safe
toy to class. Please also send the student with a lunch, snacks, and a
drink.
